Orangutan Sumatera
Orangutan Sumatran orangutan is the most threatened types between two species of orangutans in Indonesia. Compared with the 'brother' in Borneo Sumatran orangutans have differences in terms of both physical and behavioral. Species that currently can only be found in the provinces of northern and central Sumatra quickly losing their natural habitat due to the opening of plantations and settlements uantu orangutans and illegal logging.
There are 13 bags of orangutan populations in Sumatra. Of these only three bags of population likely has about 500 individuals and seven bags of population consists of over 250 individuals. Six of the seven populations are expected to lose 10-15% of their habitat due to logging so that this population will decrease rapidly.
According to the IUCN, over the last 75 years Sumatran orangutan populations have decreased by 80%. Within a period of 1998 da 1999, the rate of loss was reported to be sektar 1000 orangutans per year and are in the Leuser Ecosystem, one of the largest forest area in the northern part of Sumatra Island. Sumatran orangutan population is currently estimated only about 6,500 individuals (Strategy and Action Plan for Orangutan Conservation, Ministry of Forestry 2007) and dala IUC Red List edition in 2002, considered Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered or extinct.
